Jumping off the tallest building

Dubai: Two base-jumpers broke the world record for the highest BASE jump from a building. But they were not the first to jump from Burj Khalifa.

Burj Khalifa opened for business in the beginning of January. Not long after, two dare-devils from Emirates Aviation Society were invited to break the world record for the highest BASE jump from a building. Nasr Al Niyadi and Omar Al Helegan jumped from a platform attached to the 160th floor at 672 meters. The two men descended the vertical drop at a speed of up to 220 km/h before they opened their parachutes.

But they weren’t first. A Brit and a Frenchman did a highly illegal jump eight months earlier. Dressed as engineers, they infiltrated the building and snuck on to the under-construction site. Sneaking up to a balcony a couple of floors below the place where Al Niyadi and Al Helegan jumped,

The Burj Khalifa is reaching 828 meters over ground, and is by far the world’s tallest building. Taipei 101 comes second with only 509.2 meters.
