Carry a Swiss knife – feel like McGyver

India: The Swiss Army knife is now bringing out a prototype for the Indian army. The strong 1.3 million troops might be exactly what the company needs to recover the loss of their most important income sources.

Victorinox, the creator of the Swiss Army knife is now returning to its roots by supplying knives to armies just like they started in 1891. This time around they are producing a prototype built after the demands by the Indian Army. The strong 1.3 million Indian troops insist they must have; a saw to cut metal and a marlinspike, used to untangle knots.

The company has had a rough time especially since 9/11. They were no longer able to sell its pocket knives at two of their most important income sources; duty-free shops in both airports and aircrafts. Travellers were no longer allowed to carry them on flights and this lead to a radical change for the company and sales slumped by a third.

Victorinox wants to be known for more than the Swiss knife, they want to become a lifestyle brand. Two decades ago it started making wristwatches and after that; luggage and clothing and last year an aftershave.

The knife is a signature of the American TV show MacGyver, he often used his Swiss knife to solve problems and build mechanics. That knife had its own fan club during the MacGyver show. So maybe all the company needs is another top TV show to win everyone over?
